I am looking for a new host company for a company that I have done some work for in the past, however - I have always been with the same host company (but have moved others before with bad problems happening time and time again) but they want to move away.

What are your experiences with your host company, who is your host company and what price / plan do you have?

Please please post, really need to move these guys asap!

I have had such bad experiences with other companies that I have help set up with other companies, just need to find them a host that they can just get on with with NO PROBLEMS.

Ideally with plesk.

I am getting worried now with Richie talking about "Bad Problems". I am thinking of migrating to another hosting company but now I am thinking it could be an out of the fat into the fire situation.
I have been with Web.com for about 10 years and they are not too bad. They have a ticket system and they don't always attend within the same day.
I have a VPS (Virtual Private Server) for up to 25 domains and am currently hosting 15 (some are sub-let to clients) - about $70.00 per month. I also have a ColdFusion VPS with Intermedia.com with 2 domains on it for about $40.00 per month.
I would say that Intermedia service is slightly better. If 6 years I have not had to use their ticket system more than about 5 times - everything has run perfectly.
Intermedia also have Unix and Windows Servers.

Both Web.com and Intermedia are in USA with 6/7 hours time difference. Consequently they have enormous unused bandwidth for most of the European working day. The USA systems peak around midnight in Europe.
One problem though: Although both offer a 24/7 support service they are very slow to attend AM in Europe because it is night-time there.

In the UK you have got NameHog.net. They have been around for a long time and I have heard a lot of good about them. They are very cheap as well.

As well to remember additionally: The telephone systems in USA are very good and also in the UK. A lot depends where your clients are. Spanish Telefonica, in my opinion, is absolute rubbish. If I was serving to clients in UK, USA or Europe I would not even consider locating in Spain.

Richie - It might help if you breifly specified the clients requirements. Unix or Windows? How many domains? How much traffic?
There is a lot of stuff on offer out there, from around $8.00 a month. I have been searching for Windows hosting for a client and it is bewildering - but then I am only an aficionado!

What is needed, I have found two but would prefer to go on recommendation:

At least 2 IP unique addresses minimum UK
20 - 30 domains
Must be Linux server
Must have mysql DBs (not extra per DB)
Must be UK host
VPS or reseller account
Spam Assassin (plesk power pack)
Plesk control panel not cpanel or any of these own control panel ****
Min 512MB Guaranteed RAM - absolute min
SSI
Root access would be nice
back up and restore facility
Custom nameservers might be needed for a dozen of the domains
PHP 5

That is basically the basics that are needed.

Looking at it I would say that Interland would give you all that and more except that they are not UK based.
You did not say anything about email but they provide unlimited (unique) aliases for all domains on a VPS and a very useful system of e-mail users with their own username and password.
As they are not UK based there is no point in taking it further but what difference does it make?
I thought that, if you had a UK domain (e.g. .co.uk) then, as far as SE's are concerned you are UK based whever you are hosted.
I have not really had major problems with them, just stupid little things.
Lots of times I am not sure that they understand what I am trying to tell them - what's new?

Thanks Homefinder, but yes it has to be in the UK - one for SEO, two for support.

I have managed to narrow it down to 2 companies, just don't which one to go for yet, but will have to make a decision this week.

Bloody expensive though! I have requested a quote from them in the past and unfortunately my budget doesn't stretch that far, but all I have ever hear is good things about rackspace (would hope so for that kind of money!).

I used them when I was with a company in Scotland.

We started using them before they had a facility in the UK and if you play the UK off against the US you can get the price down, but yes they are expensive. That's why I said "If you want total control".

Good prices on there and some good features, however it looks like this is a company in the states - would much prefer a UK host and need dedicated IPs as well.

And dont want to be on a server with thousands of other websites.

But they do offer some good prices and I am sure that I can offer this to people looking for cheap web hosting but it is not for me.

Thanks for your offer and I will relate back to this if anyone else asks me for some where to host their websites.

We use Fasthosts for our dedicated servers but they have shared hosting plans too.

Excellent company, never had any problems with them. Good support too.

Various friends of mine use them too and we're all happy....so far!
