As it seems more and more that everyone agrees that pagerank is more for bragging rights rather than having much, if any, affect on actually ranking.

What is a good quantifier of a sites worth and ranking?

I've always looked at pagerank as a fairly effective way of gauging a sites quality and indicates a certain level of trust. Alternatively Alexa ranks are quite often referred to, but their rankings are so easy to artificially inflate as to become meaningless unless your in the top 10,000 (anyone can get top 100,000 if you can be bothered - email if you don't know).

For personally achievement - it is nice to wake up one morning and see your page rank jump but does it do anything for your business? What is the most important factor of the web?

It certainly isn't page rank, the main thing is being found and from and agents point of view leads!

I think I have said before I would prefer to have a PR of 0 and be number one for my choice of search term than to have a PR of say 6 and not be found anywhere!

As for Alexa - I used to look at it a lot but I can't remember the last time I looked at it (maybe over 1 1/2 years ago) as it has no bearing on how sites rank in the SERP's.

The most important thing and it always has been is the SERP's, and to gauge trust is the same thing - SERP's otherwise your site would not be where it is?

I just believe in adding fresh content on a weekly basis, having clean code, one way links and a properly optimised site on and off page. If you slowly build a good site at a normal rate and not over do it you will reap the rewards.

Unless you are one of those companies that have a sneaky deal with google - paying them for page position!

Don't just dismiss PageRank. Remember, it is still at the core of Google's algorithm.

Although PR doesn't often reflect the ranking of a website in the SERPS it does have a profound effect on the indexing of a website.

Therefore, a small site with low PR will do fine if well optimised with a few inbound links. But a big site with thousands of pages needs a high PR to get all the pages indexed well and frequently.

Indexing is a major factor in the success of a website.

I agree with eyeonspain, PR although is seen by so many inexperienced webmasters and SEO's as the Holy Grail of ranking and the "must have", it is still very important for the indexing of the site and I am sure, plays a significant role in Googles algorithm. Generally, the higher your PR the deeper your site will be indexed.

There are just so many other things you can be working on improving. Many get so tied up with trying get good PR that they forget the most important thing, the site itself and its ability to convert customers and provide an enjoyable experience to the visitor.
