About the town
• The town of Torrevieja is located on the Costa Blanca south, Spain. The once small fishing village that Torrevieja once was has transformed into a multi cultural town that is the fastest growing town / city after Madrid.
• The population has grown from a few thousand to a summer population of nearly 1 million, the winter months experience a vast drop in population - roughly down to 100,000 people.
• Torrevieja means 'Old tower' in the Spanish language, it was used as a guard tower until the early 17th century and was given the name by the residents due to the state it was in - in 1829 the town was more or less destroyed by an earthquake, but was later rebuilt.
• The town is surrounded by two large salt lakes which are supposed to be good for people that suffer from arthritis, the temperature & salt concentration in the air gives the town a special health-bringing climate which has been recommended by health experts from across the world - some even use the salt lakes regularly as a health bath. Torrevieja has an average of 310 days of sunshine a year and an average of 18 degrees in temperature.
• Being a small fishing village only a short time ago there are plenty of great places to go out and enjoy some locally caught fish. There are dozens of typical Spanish restaurants in Torrevieja, however you are more likely to find a greater selection along the front and next to the marina.
• There is no end of things to do in Torrevieja, from go karting to boat day trips - or just soaking up the sun on the nearest beach. If shopping is your weakness then Torrevieja is definitely the place for you, local food markets, all day everyday markets along the front, the main Friday market and the new Habaneras shopping centre which has also just opened a few years ago.
• There is a very cosmopolitan feel to Torrevieja, although the majority of the population still remains Spanish - there has been a huge influx of nationalities from all over the world, which is shown by the vast difference in cuisine and shopping located in the area.
• Torrevieja is surrounded by and built up of many urbanisations and smaller villages that come under the same town. Urbanisations such as Altos del Limonar, Jardin del Mar, the Torretas, Los Altos, Los Balcones and many more help build up the town of Torrevieja. Surrounding villages such as Villamartin, Cabo Roig, Campoamor, Playa Flamenca plus many others are only within a stones throw of the main town centre.
