• The Costa de Almeria covers almost 200km and runs from San Juan de los
Terreros in the north to Adra in the South. This coastline has over 3100
hours of sunshine a year, a vast expanse of coastline with superb beaches
yet remains almost completely unspoiled as it has not yet been discovered by
mass tourism. Evidence of this can be seen in the vast areas of uncultivated
land and traditional fishing villages that now would have been turned into
large tourist resorts on many of the other coasts.
However, just because this 'forgotten coast' is unspoiled doesn't mean that
it is isolated. If you buy a second Property here you can be assured that
the modern road links and the international airports of Almeria and Murcia
will make any visit to the area as easy and quick as possible.
• As with most Spanish coasts, the Costa de Almeria has earned itself a
nickname, 'the Garden of Spain'. It has a special microclimate meaning that
the average year round temperature is 17°C coupled with over 320 days of
sunshine a year. Many of the fruits and vegetables you buy in your local
supermarket are grown on the Costa de Almeria and if bad weather gets you
down, this is a perfect Costa to escape to for some sunshine therapy.
• To the west of the capital town of Almeria you will find the most
established resorts such as Almerimar, Roquetas del Mar and Aguadulce, all
developed to sustain package tourism. Roquetas de Mar is an attractive
fishing village with a buzzing harbour, 18 hole golf course named Playa
Serena and other sporting facilities whilst Aguadulce has a good selection
of bars, restaurants, hotels and a sporting marina. Almerimar has a large
marina surrounded by the usual amenities of bars and restaurants and shops
all complemented by 27 holes of golf (with another 27 to be added).
• Cabo de Gata-Nijar is one of the national parks of Almeria and is a Unesco
world heritage site. In fact even in the height of the summer you may be one
of the only people on the beach in this protected area. The park of salt
pans and sand dunes attracts few tourists apart from those who really want
peace and quiet and relaxation such as divers and naturists!
• Interestingly, the Costa de Almeria is home to Europe's one and only desert,
the Tabernas Desert. The sun-baked Wild West-style scenery has been used as
the setting for many films including, Lawrence of Arabia, 'The Good, the bad
and the Ugly', and 'Indiana Jones - The Last Crusade' as well as many
spaghetti westerns. There are several golf courses already in Almeria and
many more with approved plans which will be built within the next few years.
• This coast is quiet, so if you're after all-action and a vibrant night
scene, the Costa de Almeria is not right for you. But if a second property
in a blissful climate with peaceful, attractive landscapes is on your list
of 'musts', then consider the garden of Spain, Almeria.
