Google seems to be spitting out some strange results the last couple of days, our sites have been flying up and down the results with no real indication of what the outcome is going to be.

Has anyone else experienced the same? Does anyone know what is going on?

Yea - Google is dancing!
It happens now and again. Google results are stored on 1,000's of machines around the world and every 6 - 8 weeks the indexes are revised, machine by machine.
After a few days it settles down again.

As a complete novice in SEO matters we invested last year in appointing an SEO company and apart from linking us to his other clients we do not seem to be any further forwards. Any tips on measures that we can take to improve our visibility and therefore our page rank?

If you are a complete novice you will need more than just a few tips.

Either you need to study SEO in depth or get someone else to do it for you.

you need to look for software called IBP, internet business promotor,
you run this and it will tell you where you are ranked and reports on all you need to do to optimize your site, along with automatically submitting to search engines and directories, this is a good place to start on your road to higher rankings

We tried the trial and for us it was a waste of time, I don't believe in any SEO software.

I understand that many people do not have the experience or the time and need to resort to programs like this, but for us nothing like IBP would really benefit us.

Plus spending money on software like this is a gamble, we get e-mailed every week with offers of different software solutions which more or less do the same thing.
