| Mediterranean Diet | Healthy Red Wine Red Wine is Good For You According to an item published by the UK NHS, red wine is healthy - and that's official! Well leastways as far as rats and mice are concerned - you surely don't expect the NHS to sanction anything containing alcohol as being good for you. They say that they have to test it on humans and I am trying to find out how to volunteer. It seems that the reason is that red wine contains a chemical called Resveratrol. The Resveratrol is contained in the skin of the grape. Consequerntly, drinking white wine does not have the same effect because the skins are removed before fermentation. Quote: | Resveratrol has been shown to extend lifespan, mimicking the effects of calorie restriction in some insects. However, studies in mice that were fed a high fat diet have been limited because of the toxicity of the diet, so the real effect of resveratrol in mammals has been difficult to determine. | http://www.nhs.uk/news/2008/06June/Pages/Hearthealthandredwine.aspx You can even buy Resveratrol in capsule form and the cost is around 25 Euros per month – a bit cheaper that drinking a half bottle of red wine a day but not half as much fun.
