Rare Siamang monkey born at Terra Natura, Benidorm.
The Benidorm theme park, Terra Natura, celebrated a happy event last month with the birth of a rare Siamang monkey. Even more to celebrate: this was the first monkey ever to be born at Terra Natura.
Currently the baby ape is being cared for by it's mother and after a year or so daddy-ape will take over the responsability.
The Siamang monkey is actually a type of gibbon. Consequently it is an ape, rather than a monkey. The species is noted for it's ability to swing from tree to tree and it can reach speeds of 60 Klm/hour due to it's amazingly long arms.
The Siamang monkey is listed as a species in danger of extinction, the baby ape will grow to no more than about 85 centimetres tall. They are monagamists and stay with their partner for their whole life, of around 25 years.
An obvious problem for Terra Natura will be to find a mate for the poor little creature.
A visit to Terra Natura is a wonderful holiday treat for kids, and even mums and dads. This Benidorm theme park presents and varied display of wind animals in completely natural surroundings. Not to be missed is the Elephants feeding time with lots of viewing points around the enclosure.
Imagine being inches away from a fully-grown tiger, separated only by a sheet of plate glass!
