The service of the high speed AVE train from Madrid to Malaga opens on 23rd December 2007 by the Spanish President RodrÃ*guez Zapatero. There are 11 trains a day going in each direction. The travel takes only 2.5 hours each way with the maximum speed of 350 km per hour.
RENFE Spanish railways have changed the design of the company website to make it easier for travellers to purchase tickets online. A previous requirement to register prior to purchase has now been abandoned and users can now also change travelling times, cancel tickets and obtain refunds directly to their credit card. The company is now offering discounts of upto 40% on standard ticket prices on long distance services and upto 60% on AVE high speed lines.

I can't believe how good this is going to be for the region, it is another great selling point for the Costa del Sol and buying within the region - I saw on the Spanish news that they are also planning for other areas so hopefully it will also benefit the Costa Blanca and Murcia although it is not due to be completed until 2010 which will also be a direct to Madrid route.

They need to have a train service along the whole of the coast, that would be a great service to have, I will be using the Murcia or Alicante train to Madrid when it comes into service - the time and money saved will definitely be worth it.

I agree with you Richie, having a coastal train service across the who9le of the coast from Barcelona down to the Costa del Sol would be great for Spain and also the environment.

The amount of people that would leave their cars at home would also increase ten fold.
